How can a small change in equipment make a big difference for both patients and dental professionals? That question is the starting point for TFM Dental, a startup company in Medeon’s incubator that is developing a more user-friendly holder for digital X-ray sensors — a solution that is also expected to result in improved image quality.
With clinical experience from dental care clinics across Sweden, input from other dentists, and a clear understanding of the patient experience, TFM Dental aims to take the step from idea to market this year. The idea was born during Tiago Moreira’s studies to become a dentist in Malmö.
– When I treated patients, I experienced that the sensor holders and sensors are too bulky and angular. Many patients therefore find X-rays to be an uncomfortable procedure, and I felt there should be a better solution than those currently on the market — while also increasing efficiency, says Tiago Moreira, founder of TFM Dental.
The development work gained momentum a few years ago. With support from Drivhuset, MAU Holding’s acceleration program, and MAU Innovation, Tiago Moreira received help in structuring the idea, taking the first steps toward a finished product, and developing market strategies. Together with Join Business and Technology, an initial 3D-printed prototype was developed — a solution that has since been refined in several stages.
– The advantages of our design are several. In addition to increased patient comfort, the holder provides more stable positioning, which reduces the need for retakes. Globally, this is a problem — many dental X-ray images have to be retaken, which both takes time and causes discomfort for the patient, he says.
The company has been a member of Medeon’s incubator for one year, and the decision to apply was strategic.
– Medeon has a clear healthcare focus, and I immediately felt that I belonged here. There are other companies operating in related fields, and initiatives such as Dent2Health have given me many valuable contacts, continues Tiago Moreira.
The support from Medeon has been crucial in several parts of the company’s journey.
– Medeon’s coaches and experts have supported me with issues related to regulations, legal requirements, and board work. They have also helped me develop a go-to-market strategy, he explains.
For Tiago Moreira, 2026 will be an exciting year. The ambition is to finalize the product together with a manufacturing partner for large-scale production, recruit experts to join the board, and carry out fundraising. Early in the year, the company also plans to strengthen the organization by recruiting a CMO responsible for marketing and sales. The first customers will be either private or public dental clinics — initially in Malmö and later across the rest of Sweden.
