Since August, Biora’s operations at Medeon is led by a new site manager – American engineer Ben Butler, who brings more than a decade of experience from within the Straumann Group, Biora’s parent company. His mission is to expand the Malmö facility’s role within the global dental innovation leader.
Originally from Texas, Butler has held several process engineering and production leadership roles within Straumann. Most recently, he served as Director of Production at Straumann’s ClearCorrect facility, where he optimized and scaled up the manufacturing of the company’s nearly invisible orthodontic aligners.
Biora is fully owned by Straumann Group, a global leader in dental solutions headquartered in Switzerland that’s celebrating over 70 years of operations.
“Biora is already very well positioned within the Straumann Group, with its advanced cleanrooms, aseptic filling, and chemical manufacturing capabilities. But there’s even more potential here. The people are incredibly skilled and passionate, and the facility itself is impressive. I’m excited to be part of what’s coming next,” says Ben Butler.
One of Biora’s key areas of expertise lies in stability testing, ensuring that Straumann’s products maintain quality during storage and transport. Under Butler’s leadership, Biora will strengthen its role as the group’s global center for stability studies, while also preparing to take on new manufacturing projects, including the production of a sterile solution for another Straumann product.
Butler’s plan is clear: increase production capacity in Malmö and, over the coming years, expand further by hiring additional staff and installing new and improved equipment.
Meanwhile, Biora’s flagship product Emdogain continues its steady growth. Developed more than 30 years ago in Malmö to treat periodontal disease, Emdogain’s clinical success has led to expanding applications, with global sales still rising by 4–7 percent annually.
“It’s remarkable that Emdogain continues to generate clinical research after all these years. Dentists often tell us they’re surprised it isn’t being used in even more indications. From a business standpoint, there’s a lot happening in Biora, we’re broadening our product portfolio, becoming the group’s stability center, and increasing Emdogain production. China may even become a new market once regulatory approval is completed.”
Having recently moved to northern Europe, Ben Butler is enthusiastic about his new surroundings. “Relocating from Texas to Malmö with my family has been a huge and exciting change. We are thrilled at the opportunity and find Malmö a very welcoming, family friendly, and positive city. The cities culture combined with Medeon’s collaborative environment makes me very excited for what possibilities the future can bring,” say
