The Medeon Award was created to showcase advanced diabetes research at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC) at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC) in Malmö.

In the fall of 2010, then CEO of Medeon, Bengt Lövdén, initiated discussions with Carl-David Agardh, professor of endocrinology at Skåne University Hospital (SUS) and former board member of Medeon AB (deceased in 2014) regarding a stronger focus on diabetes research at Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC) at the Clinical Research Centre (CRC). The aim was highlighting the cutting edge diabetes research being conducted at LUDC and CRC in Malmö.

With the support of Medeon's board to emphasize this focus, the Medeon award was established. The scholarship was intended to be rewarded to a promising diabetes researcher at LUDC, requiring a sponsor to finance it. At the time, Öresundsbanken (later split into Sparbanken Skåne and Swedbank) contributed SEK 25 000:- also sponsoring the award in 2012.

The scholarship was originally awarded in conjunction with Medeon's spring celebration in May or June, accompanied by research presentations. The first recipient, Anders Rosengren, was rewarded the scholarship on May 18th, 2011. The jury then consisted of Carl-David Agardh, Bengt Lövdén, and a representative from Öresundsbanken.

This collaboration with LUDC also benefited Medeon companies by providing them with marketing opportunities at the event.

Today, the Medeon Award is jointly funded by Medeon and our partners law firm Moll Wendén and financial advisor Max Matthiesen the has been increased to SEK 50 000:-. It is now awarded in Malmö in connection with World Diabetes Day in Skåne in november, in collaboration with various partners.

As of 2025, a total of 14 researchers from Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC) have received the Medeon Award.
